How does therapy even work?

October 1, 2023

Therapy works by rewiring our brain. Experiencing our emotions in a safe environment and letting down our defense mechanisms create cognitive dissonance or mismatching experiences over time. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)allows for dissonance to take place. Enough of that over time, our fears and insecurities start to leave.

The emotional pains of life need a comforter…anyone who understands what real compassion is, can do therapy. Anyone who can ask forgiveness and also forgive others in their personal relationships is therapeutic. Anyone who is kind and non judgmental in the face of difficult circumstances is safe. Essentially, anyone who can hold space for another and not seek any assurance in return can be healing for someone else. So often times, it is that those closest to us put themselves before or above us even in the most subtle well meaning ways. Built up over time, that person proves themselves untrusting of our innermost thoughts and feelings and we in turn put on our masks around them as protection. This dynamic with our loved ones exists at varying levels and intensities throughout life and has the potential to drive us to harmful behaviors. The challenge now becomes who are we in the face of difficult and sometimes even cruel treatment? How do we let those hurts and pains shape our reality? Can we find a way to safely express and challenge our thoughts?

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 5:3-10 NIV
